Dramatic price increase in past year

This canister is a sacrificial part of an awesome humidifier. It's easily installed; it actually takes the humidifier longer to go through it's shut down procedure than to change the canister. I've had my Aprilaire humidifier for about 15 years and the replacement canisters have been about $60 for a long time, they have now increased to nearly $100. Other vendors seem to be about the same price point. Water quality has everything to do with the canister's longevity. I've had cartridges that would only last about 3 weeks before having an indication. I installed a water softener about 2 years ago and a canister will last all winter now. I installed an inline filter on the water supply going to my dehumidifier and tried a "lime buster" cartridge but didn't help much; a softener is the only solution if you have hard water. I spoke to a customer service rep at AprilAire some time ago who was very helpful and knowledgeable who told me about a cleaning method for the canisters. When you get a notification to replace, remove the old cartridge and soak it in a tub or sink with water and a high concentration of CLR or white vinegar. Make sure the water is deep enough to fill the cartridge. Let it soak for 24-48 hours and slosh it around periodically. Rinse it thoroughly with clear water and allow to air dry. If you take time to look into the top of the canister before soaking you can see the electrodes, they look like screens, you can see a lot of mineral build up. Take another look after cleaning and rinsing and they will be visibly cleaner. I've cleaned canisters as many as 3 times and reused them. If you try this procedure, it might be a good idea to look at the electrodes in a new one for future reference.

Really easy to change and it lasts a year.

This canisters is easy to change. It let you know when it needs to be changed. So far they last a year. I have been using them for three years now.

It does exactly what it's supposed to do, installation was a breeze

There's not a lot to say about this product. If you have the boiler-style whole home humidifier (basically a requirement in a large home in a desert environment), you don't have any choice about having to periodically buying one of these things. Installation took less than 10 minutes and it just works. Added bonus, the jug is now opaque (older ones were translucent) so you don't have to see all the crud inside. That said, it's a $100 plastic jug, let's not kid ourselves that it's anything more than that. Ridiculously overpriced for what it is.

Easy to Install..Did like the Older Version which was 'see through' instead of opaque...

the newer replacement canisters are opaque...the older ones were see through so you could see how much calcium buildup the canister has in it easier...other than that it is a very simple thing to replace... takes less then fifteen minutes including reading the instructions to install .... would highly recommend this system.

This is a must to keep your humidifier working

I resisted changing the canister in my AprilAire unit out, but if you notice declining humidity in your house, especially in cold weather, this is probably the issue. When you remove the old canister, you can look inside and see how much is left of the electrodes. If it's been a year or two, they are likely shot, and the new canister will restore 100% of your humidifying capacity.

It works as expected

As the price of this unit has skyrocketed in the past year, I am deducting a star. There's no generic item available for this, so we are forced to pay the cost listed. There's been a change in the canister material as previous units were more translucent enabling you to see any potential build-up inside. These are now opaque white.

Cannister can be cleaned and reused a couple of times

I like the cannister since the hard water minerals can be easily cleaned with CLR, Vinegar, or even Coca Cola and placed back into service a couple of times. Easy clean up and disposal of old cannisters.
