Decent DIY or commercial disposable tool
I admit I was influenced to buy this by Eric O’s use of this tool on the South Main Auto YouTube channel. The real innovation here is using a vise grips to acquire a solid ground for 12v automotive power tracing. The cheap spring loaded alligator clamps on most other test lights are prone to sketchy connections and coming loose during testing. Otherwise this is just a mid-range made in China test light. I’ve been a fan of Astro tools for a long time and happily own and use many of their products. They are typically high quality tools made in Taiwan (NOT mainland China). And while mainland China manufactured products can indeed be top-quality, this one more conforms to the stereotype of a cheap China knock-off. Here’s what Astro needs to improve to live up to the expectations for it’s otherwise well -regarded brand: The vise-grip part is clearly just a knock-off of a decades old design from the original Vise Grip product line. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a very faithful reproduction and seems to work exactly like the original. But there are better designs that have evolved since the original and Astro should have been using one of those or created their own. What I would like to see specifically is one that is self-adjusting like the Viper Grip locking plier with roughly the same size and jaw configuration. That way attaching the ground clamp would be a one handed one-time operation. The ring terminal that attaches the wire to the plier component is riveted to the plier. And the wire is not soldered to the ring terminal. It’s merely crimped in place. So if (when?) the ring terminal to wire connection fails you can’t simply unbolt the ring terminal, re-terminate the wire, and bolt the ring terminal back in place. Some grinding, drilling, and tapping will be necessary to effect the repair. As is clearly called out in the description, the wire has a black PVC jacket. A quality test lead would have a silicone rubber jacket that would be more abrasion and heat resistant. I use silicone jacketed, very fine stranded tinned conductor wire for all of my shop-made test and jumper leads. Durability and longevity is the issue here. For occasional use on equipment that has cooled PVC is probably OK. But for a commercial shop where time is money, this could be better. If I can figure this out, Astro can too. Another characteristic of the wire is that it was molded into a coil. A similar Snap On test light I also own uses a non-coiled wire. I think there are pros and cons to using each style. Just something to be aware of. The test light handle itself is reasonably well constructed. It’s not as heavy duty in construction as the Snap On test light but that’s not the component that breaks on these things so this is probably adequate. And it does have a metal coil spring strain/bend reliever for where the wire enters the butt of the handle which is a nice touch. But since it is conductive I can foresee a slight risk of it unintentionally bridging exposed conductors when used in a tight area like under a dashboard or in power distribution box. The Snap On test light uses a similar coiled, but non-conductive plastic strain/bend relief. The probe tip on both the Astro and the Snap On are uninsulated. I would prefer that all but the last 1/2” be insulated to avoid the possibility of making unintended contact with adjacent circuits. But a piece of shrink tubing can fix that if you’re so inclined. The probe tip itself is more slender on the Snap On and can be used to back-probe some connectors. The Astro’s tip is thicker with a fairly steep conical grind to make the point. Good luck back probing with that. The conductor you are testing needs to be more exposed to use the Astro than the Snap On. Both seem durable enough that bending shouldn’t be an issue although the Astro’s tip is probably more resistant to bending that the Snap On tool’s tip. The last thing is the lack of conformity to the current draw specification (0.45A) published by Astro. My sample as measured by a bench power supply and separately by a Fluke DVM draws 0.31A at 12V. For most applications that discrepancy doesn’t matter much and the bulb still lights up brightly enough to be useful. But you may want to calibrate yours if, like me, you intend to sometimes use the test light as a substitute load for testing purposes. I’ll be keeping mine. But if/when the wire fails I’ll probably replace it with a straight silicone jacketed finely stranded wire soldered to a ring terminal and affix it with a stainless steel screw and star washer to a hole I’ll drill and tap into a Viper Grip plier.

Funciona mejor que las luces de prueba tradicionales

Cheaply made
OK, I gave it three stars and only because of the design. The plier part brings down the rating because it is cheesy. I returned mine. How is it possible to make anything this bad? I am going to take a nicer plier from the drawer, snip the ground clip off of my circuit tester, and weld it to the plier.

Troubleshooting is easier using this test light
I have several different test lights but found that this test light is the best
