Dragon ones are better
As someone hopelessly addicted to these transforming dice toys, I can say of that of the various models available, this is one of the better ones, just not the best. Like the dragon ones, this one uses the dice shell in a fun way that kind of feels like unwrapping a small gift or popping open a capsule toy case, but once it's open the tentacles feel more like the Owl Bear model in that they get close to looking right but never quite do unlike the dragons who's dice shell folds out into a really clever wing design. That all being said, the design looks better than all others except the dragons and the process of transforming from dice to monster feels nice and is fun. Closing it back up can be a little bit frustrating because of the shifts that happens to get the tentacles looking righ and the mass of the torso, but it's still a great toy.

A fun item on discount
This is a cool novelty item that blends the old transformers feel with a D&D dice. We got it on clearance and I'm happy at that price point. It's not as smooth of a transition between dice and dragon as you might hope and the jointed pieces can pop off easy, so would avoid if you were thinking for smaller kids. Aside from that though it is pretty cool and could be combined with the others to add a fun element of risk and surprise to a game (ie someone picks a dice to roll and if they get a 20, it transforms into that mob for the table to fight). But also cool to just have on a shelf.

It's...okay....
So, first of all, it arrives in an odd-shaped box on a backing card (they break down as all one piece). The die/figure is held in place in the box by two pieces of support cardboard. When you open the box, the piece is in 20-sided die shape and has tissue paper sticking out of it, presumably to prevent the parts from rubbing against each other in transit. There are fold-out instructions in the box as well. The instructions are a little hard to follow. They aren't always clear about how a piece of the miniature moves. For instance, the head piece is supposed to swing up, but to do this you have to press down on the back edge of the back of the neck. The first move to "transform" the figure is to open the wings. I did this and promptly had one of the forearms fall off. It's a ball-and-socket mount, so I snapped it back on. The figure is decent looking with some good articulation when you have it opened up. The forearm on mine fell off again twice more while I was transforming it. The figure's joints are stiff enough that it can stand on its own when fully transformed as well. The die faces become (among other things) the wings of the dragon figure. They have good enough articulation that they don't necessarily look like "dice pieces." Getting the figure back into the die shape is difficult though. The instructions don't provide steps for this, and reverse engineering the previous instructions isn't as useful as you might think. The forearms in particular can be troublesome (in addition to the previous mention of the forearms tendency to fall off). It's a fun figure though. The jaw is articulated as well, and the face sculpt is close enough to the picture in the monster Manual. It's a fun toy to have, but it's not for young children. Also, in die form, it isn't balanced enough to be considered a truly random d20.

Overall pretty good but one issue for me
Overall, pretty cool figure! It's actually well designed for my standards and it has some nice detail to it. Though an issue I had was that mine wouldn't completely close, and it wasn't even a bad issue, it was just that both wings wouldn't completely shut and leave like a "crack" in it. But I like this product, would buy again!

... I just think they're neat.
Wizards of the Coast hasn't been batting a thousand lately, but ya gotta give credit where it's due- this is a neat nerd gift. Not the greatest transformer on earth- you might need to experiment a bit to get it to fold back up right- but it's a pretty decent execution of a cool idea. The dragon form is surprisingly poseable- shoulders and hips aren't the best, but I love how articulated the head, tail, and wings are. A good desk-topper or stocking stuffer.

Beautiful collection piece!
Got as part of a birthday gift to my husband, he was instantly in love! Inside has a more rubbery type of material, details are done very nicely! Beautiful gift for any dice goblin!

nice
you need to have the manual handy to make it back into dice, not and intuitive reshaping, but overall its nice.

It's a toy
Almost perfect toy, though it could have used some more R&D. Most of it is very nice, tightly fitting hard plastic, but the hands, feet, head, and tip of tail are soft vinyl. Being very thin tapers, the horns are wonky and look like it chewed on them when it was originally folded. You can reshape them with gentle heat and holding them in the correct position until cooled, but with such a tight curl, don't expect much. Shipping was also very unreliable and I'd expected better from such a large brand. First one was lost and I didn't receive tracking info on it or the replacement until they were supposed to be delivered. (These were preorders though and should not have been delivered until March. Nice, but very unprofessional.)
