Works for big jobs
I purchased this paint sprayed for several big jobs around the house (painting the inside and outside of two large sheds, priming and painting a large concrete basement that I use for a workshop and studio. I've only used it for latex paint, and clean up of the nozzles, gun, and hose after spraying latex paint is fairly straightforward. Setup of the sprayer for painting (literally priming the pump) is fairly straightforward. The key to longevity is definitely to clean up the hose, nozzles and gun at the end of each use. In use, it's pretty straightforward. You need to stop occasionally to reverse the nozzle to clear clogs. Long term maintenance, beyond cleaning after each use, means filling the hose and pump with winter conditioner and storing the sprayer somewhere where it won't freeze if possible. After several big jobs you'll likely need to replace the nozzle in the spray gun (you'll know). I feel like it's a cost effective tool compared to what you can do (volume and time) compared to what it would cost in labor if you hired someone to do the same paint job. You do use more paint when spraying than if you paint by brush so factor that in. Recommended.

I'm using this on concrete fiber board exterior. It is a very rough surface that looks like shingle and has faux wood grain, and the house is big. I'm doing a primer coat and two top-coats. There are millions of crevices -- ranging from miniscule to 1/4" between the faux shingles. This sprayer has been a miracle tool. I tried roller and brush, and it took me an hour to do what takes seconds (and that's no hyperbole) with this machine. And, the sprayed results look far better than the segment I rolled. If prepped properly, I could spray one coat on the entire exterior of the house in a long day. The prep is arduous, tedious, time-consuming, but the payoff is the fast, even paint job once you start spraying. Some tips I've picked up either from pro's or my limited experience: - Leave time for plenty of prep before you set up the machine. Pressure washing is time-consuming and tiring. Masking, the process of taping down plastic over bits where you don't want paint to get, is also time-consuming and exhausting. Masking windows and doors isn't too difficult. Masking soffits and roofing areas can be an ordeal. I tried the 3M masking gun, and IMO it's one of those "too good to be true" things and not worth the money. I was able to get the masking where I wanted it far more precisely and nearly as quickly by simply applying a strip of 2" wide masking tape (nominal 1.88") and leaving the outer lip up off the surface. Then, I folded that loose lip of tape back and rolled the plastic film out along the exposed lip of tape. 3M has a good film -- I standardized with several rolls of the 72", and I got one roll of 99" for very tall sliding doors and such. If you have a big exterior masking job ahead of you, seek out videos where a pro masks the soffits; that's the most tiring and voluminous part of the task. - Follow the PPE precautions. You will inhale the paint particles if you don't have a mask; they're very fine and unavoidable. I found a good mask and eye protection essential. - Read what size spray tip is recommended by the paint manufacturer and buy that size spray tip -- it may not be the size that comes with the sprayer. Paint manufacturers provide a data sheet on their products with spray tip size, drying time, re-coat time, etc.; search for the data sheets online for the exact paints you plan to use. Getting the right size spray tip makes a difference. - Carefully follow the instructions on cleaning the machine. My first time using it I missed a step, and it cost me time on subsequent clean-ups catching up for that mistake. - People love to tell you how to spray. Overlaps. When to press the trigger. When to release the trigger. Maintaining the right distance from the surface. Here's what I'll say. Learning to spray is like learning the dice game craps -- you just need to jump in and try it. Spraying will come to you in time, and quality paint on rougher surfaces means more leeway for the learner. Spraying smooth surfaces is more difficult to master; so, maybe save the garage door for the end. Start with less conspicuous surfaces (e.g. back of the house). I noticed that pro's don't always do great, either. I'd suggest watching a couple videos on spraying, but focus your research on making the prep easy and effective because that research will save you more time, aggravation, and money in the end. - Many pro's say you have to backroll (spray then roll over the surface with a roller). I know a pro who does that religiously with fabulous results. I tried it on my house, and the backrolled looked not as good as leaving the sprayed surface alone. So, maybe try it in an inconspicuous place and decide if it's really worth it. I could see backrolling being important on smoother surfaces to even out gloppiness.

Not as complicated as people think
Absolutely love this. With the right masking and prep I sprayed 4 gallons of paint on my shed in 45 minutes. Cleanup and storage is very easy 15 minutes. I despise painting but love this sprayer.

Great Painter - Worth EVERY PENNY!
I wasn't sure if I was buying "too much" of an airless painter, especially since it would be for personal use. Wife wanted the 20 yr old oak kitchen cabinets painted white. Then included the laundry room and pantry as well. Knew about the grain concerns. Tried using my small hand held sprayer at first - not the quality of finish I wanted. Did quite a bit of research, and since I am going to be painting the entire house - inside and out next spring.. arrived at purchasing this Graco X19 sprayer. After a short learning curve, started on the laundry room first... then pantry, then kitchen. Excellent finish. Easy to clean up, even when using oil based primer. Have to say I am excitedly looking forward to painting the house now. This is really a great product! One word of advice - remember that prep work takes the longest time (by far), and is the most important part of a good paint job!
