This type of probe is not meant to be precise.
When I first bought this probe and did pH tests, I was disappointed in its accuracy and was ready to return it. I have access to pH standards at 4.00pH, 7.00pH and 10.00pH. Full disclosure, the standards have expired sometime between 2020-2021 but I have measured them with a fully calibrated digital probe and they are still within specified accuracy range. Now, the Rapitest probe cannot be used as is out of the box. The metal used on the probe oxidizes very fast and needs to be buffed prior to measurement. Keep in mind that the supplied scouring pad is useless as it does not polish the metal well. For each test I have used a very fine steel wool which produced a very smooth shiny probe (do not polish the tip of the probe, just the shaft). First, I measured the 4.00pH standard and the probe readout never came close to that value. It settled just below 5. Then, I proceeded with a 7.00pH and the probe readout settled just below 7. Now I realize, that the 10.00pH is out of range for this probe but I decided to test it just for fun. The meter settled way out of range after 9 as I would expect. In conclusion, the probe behaved in the right direction with regards to each pH standard but it did not measure the proper values. Since then, I have purchased and tested several pH probes of the same type and my expectations have dropped. I realized, that this type of probe does not produce accurate measurements, nor it is meant to. It is a guideline if the soil is acidic or alkaline. If a precise measurement is needed, be prepared to pay more money for a decent digital pH meter that uses a glass type probe and requires periodic calibrations. This probe can not be calibrated by the user but it can be tested against pH standards. By the way, for those who are trying to measure distilled water and expect to read a pH of 7 - do not. The distilled water is only neutral (pH 7) at the time of distillation. The moment it is exposed to atmosphere, it absorbs CO2 from the air and becomes acidic. I have used a calibrated digital pH probe and used up several expensive pH strips testing our tap water, filtered water, distilled water, and de-ionized water. They all came up in the range from 5-5.5 pH. If you see a 7 on the meter while measuring water, make sure you have polished the probe well, 7 is a neutral position for the probe.

You can hold it in your hand and read the instrument.
Easiest way to measure the amount of water in a pot of flowers. You just hold part of it in your hand and put the other part in the pot to see if it’s needing water and it will tell you quickly.

they only last on average 3 months about24-30 uses.
i have purchased 6 of these from 6/21-10/28/2022.i use it twice a week.they do not last more than 3 months on average. 24-30 uses. they are good til they stop working. i always clean them in alcohol and keep them in a cool place. the first one i bought june 2021 lasted 7 days i threw it away yet tried again aug 2022 bought 2 of them .both lasted 2 months. bought one oct 16th broke in a week got another oct 28th and it actually lasted til today march 11 2023.but i was away and only used it from feb til today. so you will need to buy 4-5 per year if you use it 2 times a week. they are good but not made to last.

Second one in about 10 years.
Works great. Like the long cord.

Good product when it works, but only lasts two years
I have bought several of these and each one has an average life of only two years. That is disappointing. And, it has gone way up in price. $12 at first, now close to $20.

Great little tool, with one big drawback - MISSING BASIC HERBS?!? & a fix.
So I have a black thumb. Usually I don't care, but I do like fresh herbs in my food, particularly basil. Now that it's winter, grocery stores scarcely stock fresh herbs, so I've resorted to (trying to) growing my own. So far, I'm doing a terrible job.I bought this soil moisture meter to help me figure out why my basil plant was touch and go and seemingly really high maintenance. As soon as the meter came in the mail, I popped the package open and started reading. "Includes watering needs for over 150 plants!" Guess what? Not one of them is basil...or any herb, really. No parsley, oregano, etc. Frustrated, I took to the internet and found this pdf from Luster Leaf that had some additional plants and their watering needs listed. I've included them below. Note, below is not the entire list, just a smaller list of plants that seem to be left off the official Luster Leaf instructions included with the plant meter. Hint: 1st number is the "water number" (how wet it should be. Most plants here are between 2-5); 2nd number is how many days before you should check it again (most plants are ever 1-3 days); and the last number(s) are additional comments specific to that plant. See the key below the plant list for the key. Alyssum 5 3 3 Artichoke 4 3 2, 3 Asparagus 4 3 2, 3, 10 Azalea 5 2 2 Bamboo 5 2 2 Basil 4 1 2, 3 Bean 3 3 2, 3 Beet 4 3 2, 3 Broccoli 3 3 2, 3 Cabbage 4 3 2, 3 Camellia 5 2 3 Canna 4 3 2 Cauliflower 3 3 2, 3 Celery 5 3 2, 3 Chard 4 3 5, 10 Cilantro 5 3 3 Corn 3 3 2, 3 Cucumber 4 3 3, 10 Daffodil 5 1 Dahlia 5 1 9 Dianthus 3 2 Eggplant 4 3 10 Hydrangea 8 3 Impatiens 5 2 Iris 4 1 Lemon Balm 5 3 2 Lettuce 4 3 10 Lily 5 2 5 Marigold 4 2 8 Melon 4 1 2, 8 Mint 4 2 Mum 5 3 9 Onion 3 3 2, 3, 10 Oregano 3 1 5 Parsley 5 3 2, 3 Pea 5 3 2, 8 Peppers 3 3 2 Petunia 5 2 Pine 4 2 Potato 3 3 Primrose 5 3 Radish 3 3 3 Rhododendron 5 1 3 Rose 5 3 3, 10 Spinach 4 3 3, 8 Squash 4 3 3, 10 Strawberry 4 3 8, 10 Tomato 4 2 10 TuberBegonia 5 3 4 Tulip 4 1 Turnip 4 3 Watermelon 4 1 2, 8 Zinnia 2 2 8 Comment Key 1. Spray foliage daily 2. Never let soil dry out 3. Keep soil moist but never soggy 4. Keep soil wet at all times 5. Allow soil to dry between watering. 6. Soil should remain dry 4–5 days 7. Reduce watering during dormant period. 8. Water from beneath (in saucer.) Never wet foliage. 9. Water more and more frequently when temperatures are hot. 10. Water thoroughly. So, basil's water # shouldn't be higher than a 4, it should be checked daily, And the comments are to never let the soil dry out, keep it moist but not soggy. Guess how my basil was doing???? Yeah, it's bad. Hope this helps someone else!

Brilliant
Arrived super fast! And it's a brilliant little device! Just make sure to take care of it such as don't leave it in the soil or don't submerge it in water and most importantly make sure to clean it after use! Now I can monitor my plants moisture levels perfectly.

Completely useless!
I've owned numerous soil pH meters over the past 50 plus years and this one is my latest having arrived earlier today. I have been testing it in soils & growing media of specific known pH values for the past 30 minutes and it is completely useless. The needle never rises above 7 and has yet to fall below 6.5. Yes, I've followed the instructions carefully and in any event know about pH meters and how to use them. I've similarly tested another and cheaper pH meter alongside my new Rapitest model and this is given correct readings. So a complete waste of £16 plus and I want a refund. Very disappointed.

The enclosed list dosen't mention vegitables.
Have only recently received it but it seems fine. I bought it to check the soil I grow my tomatoes in, but tomatoes are not on the scaling list, only indoor plants, so its a bit of a guess at the moment. Stew
