Small but strong
Have had this filter in my 5 gallon betta tank since the beginning of January 2023 and it’s be working great! The suction cups can be annoying and the filter will slide down from time to time, but that isn’t a major issue for me. I really like that it opens so that you can put your own filter media in if you want, I definitely recommend this filter! - Important note for anyone with a betta. The outflow is pretty strong, but if you point it towards a corner of the tank or upwards your betta shouldn’t have a problem with the current. I have a betta with obnoxiously long fins and he doesn’t have a problem with the current as long as the filter is pointed towards the corner of the tank.

It's quiet. It's not terrible. It works. It will do.
It is small, which I like, quiet, and it is the smallest internal power filter with low flow (45 gph) I could find. The adjustable flow, on the lowest setting, is reasonable for a betta in a 5 gallon (rated for up to 10 gal) and the outflow can be directed up to 180 degrees. It is essentially a very small, coarse, bio-sponge (about 1.5" x 1.5" x 1") inside a water pump (housing measures 1.5 x 1.5 x 3.25) and can be positioned on the tank walls or bottom where and how you need it as long as it is immersed. An air driven mini sponge filter would provide more biological filtration than this. The sponge is easy to remove, rinse, and replace (no need for expensive cartridges). I added a piece of felt on the intake side of the sponge to pre-filter debris mechanically. The felt fills up every day and I have been rinsing just the felt it each day for water polishing. Once my tank stabilizes I will remove this filter as I am using a sponge filter as the main filtration in addition to a full tank of plants. The suction cups have been vibrating loose from the side of the sphere shaped 5 gallon aquarium I have it in. They stay better when attached to a flat surface such as my aquarium's bottom. In addition the cups are very tiny and easily pull out staying behind still attached to the glass when the filter is removed from the glass. I have to watch closely when handling not to lose the suction cups down the sink as they don't all stay on when the filter is opened for cleaning. The plastic is thin, but seems adequate. This listing's info is confusing and should be corrected to say that the Cascade 170 model does not come with a spray bar. I have not used the aeration feature. My betta doesn't seem to mind the flow on low so I'm glad I have it to use when needed. If I wanted to use an internal power filter instead of an air pump and sponge I would go ahead and use this as the main filter in my 5 gal.

Strong flow with some issues
I purchased two of these filters for two of my nano tanks as a submersible solution. Both of these filters do a very good job with suction and the water in both of those tanks is noticeably clearer. They are small enough that they can sit in the corners without taking too much space and be distracting (both plants being planted also helps with this). As water changes are done at least once weekly in those tanks, I make sure to squeeze out the sponges (however, I may be replacing the stock sponges that came with this filter). The problems I have noticed are: 1- Output is exceptionally strong, even on the lowest setting. I've removed the directional nozzle so that it would blow towards the surface only. Another problem with the output was that it was constantly knocking the unit off of the tank walls, which leads to problem # 2... 2- The suction cups are not the greatest at keeping the units on the tank walls. Even with the directional output removed, the unit still dislodges after a few days. It doesn't stray far or damage plants in either setup but it is pretty annoying. Stronger/better quality suction cups should solve this problem. 3- The aerator...not even useful. resulted in a few episodes of water being expelled when the filter dislodged and changed position. 4- I do wish that there was even a small (2-3") spray bar that would help diffuse the output more. Maybe that is something that PennPlex can consider adding to future iterations of this model. Overall, a good filter with just a few things that if improved can make the product better.

Great for small tanks
I've had this in a 2 gallon tank for 4 years. Running 24/7 the whole time. Still working like new. If you have a small tank, don't bother shopping around, just get this filter.

Not for a 3 gallon and under
I bought this because I couldn't find a small filter for a 3 gallon or less beta round tank. This works but it seems to be a bit much in a round small tank. It has a switch on it for high and low. I recommend this for a 5 gallon and up even though it says 3 -10 gallon

Compact, but very powerful.
This is a pretty solid filter that's small and will fit in almost any aquarium. It serves its purpose, but there are a few downsides. Number 1, its incredibly powerful, even when the green notch is all the way to the left. It would throw my vieltail betta fish around in his 5 gallon tank. To get around this, I added some lava rocks around the filter so the water isn't thrown around like a vortex. Number 2, the suction power isn't the greatest. Took a while for the top two suction cups to stick onto the glass. To get around this, I just placed a few lava rocks on the bottom which supports it up. But for the price, I honestly can't complain. Cleaned my water (I used aquarium sand + fluval stratum) in less than an hour, so very impressed in that sense. Overall, great little filter, seems to be doing fine, plenty of power and does what its supposed to. I recommend.

You get what you pay for
Came assembled. I took it apart to look inside and could not get the case snapped back on easily. The plastic bends way too easily. Those who say this is quiet must not have the air hose attached. With the air hose on it sounds like someone sucking a drink at the bottom of a glass! I was hoping it would be quiet since it's fully submerged but it is quite loud. I will try without the air hose attached. Size is awesome for a small tank - fits in my palm. In a crunch it is fine but I will buy a better one when the stores reopen.

Good value, good price. 5 star, would recommend
The media could not be loaded. I'm fairly impressed. This little filter is better than expected. I'm sure it would do well in a 5 gallon tank. I'm using this in a 20 gallon long for extra water movement. Having a sponge over the impeller helps a lot as I used to use small fountain/pond pumps in the same way. The problem with pond pumps is you have to cover them with your own sponge (which looks horrible) or clean them every few days/weeks (depending on plants and stocking). This filter looks good, its quiet, has a long cord doesnt take up much room at all! The only con so far in my opinion would be the sponge itself. It's a bit small to hold much beneficial bacteria. In the video you can see I have it upside down, works pretty well as a surface skimmer :)

Broke after less than two months
Put this in as a secondary filter in a 10gal and I realized during my last water change that it had stopped working at whatever point prior to the water change but I had no way of knowing due to it being fully submerged... Opened it up and saw it wasn't clogged up or anything and it worked fine again after reconnecting but I've been having to check on it frequently to make sure it's not off. Still have no idea why it just stopped working and it runs louder than my hangback filters from Tetra and Aquareon. Update: completely dead after just about a month and a half of use... Total waste of money you'd be much better off with a usb air pump and sponge filter.
