Nice, but on the small side!

Works great for vegetables!
I only use this for fixing fresh vegetables, so I can't speak to its performance with other types of food. But for veggies it works great, and it gets pretty much daily usage in our household. In part, that frequency is due to the fact the compartment is on the small side, so even without the tray insert (which I've never had a need for), it holds just enough vegetables for 1-3 people at a time - depending on what kind of vegetables, how much they cook down, and how much people eat. For example, spinach cooks down so much that there's barely enough for two people. However, it's so efficient, you can easily just do two loads. It's actually better that way, because that means your vegetables are freshly cooked for every meal. And it's super easy to clean - basically you can get away with simply rinsing it out with water, if you do it right away. After a full year of heavy use, it's still going strong. When I first got it, I was afraid the hinges might be prone to tearing (where the material is thinner), but so far no problems. I am careful about handling it in such a way as to not unduly stress the hinge joints, though. All in all, it's replaced almost all of our previous stovetop vegetable preparation. I still do large batches, some root vegetables (like fresh beets), and green beans on the stove. That's about it. Everything else goes in the Lekue!

sold on the lekue line of steamers, I have this and large flatter one, use it all the time. only thing is you have to really wash thorougly with oily foods. also very floppy. I feel totally clumsy when washing them. but I use it all the time. steams food well, my favorite way to prepare organic fresh green beans steamed in 3 minutes. yum!
