My go-to pup carrier and pup house since 2002!

The Petmate portable pet house has been the carrier and the safe-haven for my dogs for a little over 20 years now. I still have the original one I bought in April 2002, and have since added a half-dozen more over the years. I use this as a carrier and my pups also love them as a cozy place to sleep, so I have them all over the house. I love the fact that the sides and back mesh windows can be covered with rolling down the covers, so air is still ventilating, but the pups can be cozier during the cold winter weather in Boston. I also added a way to buckle the carrier to keep my pups safe in the car. I also like the fact that the close down pretty flat and store right in the bag it comes with…this is a feature I use for the ones I keep at camp for winter storage. Overall 5 STARS for 20+ years of use!

Good item that can fold up flat to store.

We have another one, same brand and model, we got several years ago. They have kept the original design however the quality the materials has deteriorated somewhat, hence the 4 stars rating. Still right for what we wanted and need for our kitties. Ease of storage is ideal.

No bottom support, but still good carrier

I've had a Petmate carrier like this for 15 years. Decided to buy a new one as my old one has been breaking down for a while now at the seams that hold the canopy supports (the metal beams). I was disappointed to see that Petmate has cut a few corners since the last time I bought this. The bottom support is foam. I don't recall if it has always been that way but I have a thin plywood support in my old Petmate carrier. I may have added that years ago by pulling it from another carrier but I feel like it's necessary to safely support my cat. You think foam is going to hold the weight of a 12 pound furball? That carrier would not last long with just foam for support. The canvas carrier bag is also downgraded to a cheap fabric that I doubt will hold up in the wash, and is flimsy. One improvement I see is that the old vinyl beam supports are now fabric (which was probably also a downgrade), but perhaps they will hold up better than the vinyl and prevent the wires from poking through like they did for me on the old version. Overall, I am disappointed and would return this if I didn't already have spare parts from my old carriers. I'll be reusing my old wood support and 15 yr old canvas carrier bag from the one I'm replacing. It's a well made carrier but not without proper support added to it.

Highly recommend, just a couple minor things.

I bought a smaller version of this several years ago for my cats (2). Worked great, loved it, still do. But as my cats have gotten older one has gained weight and they no longer both fit comfortably. So we decided to get another one that was one size up. Well it's too big. It's huge. It's double the size of my old one, would have preferred if they went only a half size bigger. I don't know how anyone would be able to carry a large dog in this as it's so big the dog would be quite heavy. But on top of the size they changed one major thing that I don't like at all. Both have a sheepskin pad that can be washed, which is great. Inside the sheepskin pad of my old one is a piece of plywood which works great to give it a really solid foundation. This new bigger one had a foam pad inside the sheepskin that could not support the weight of my two cats. It sank and caused the bottom of the carrier to become very rounded and so they sunk into the hole it created. I'm sure they didn't like that at all. So I had to go to home depot and buy plywood to cut and fit into the sheepskin. Luckily they had some scrap pieces left over from what someone else had cut off so it was pretty cheap to do. It works much better now. I can't imagine why they would change to something that wouldn't support the animal inside. Plywood isn't that expensive and works so much better. Otherwise it's still the best carrier I've ever bought. I get complements on it whenever I take my cats to the Vet or anywhere. People are always impressed with the quality of it. They are built to last, made very well. I keep my assembled and sitting in the corner of the room. My cats enjoy laying in it often. Something they would never do with those cheap plastic carriers. I highly recommend these. Just wish they had a size in between this one and my smaller one. And they need to go back to using plywood in the base.

NIGHTMARE. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY

Drove from BC back to Ontario which takes about 5 days with our cats and not even 20 mins of the trip, the zipper broke. Because there are 2 zippers 1 one on each side when unzipping, the entire carrier collapses and loses its structure. The zippers do not have a latch to lock so it very easy to open. When the zippers are closed and I tied them together with an elastic band, my cat pushed the zipper and it completely broke open with the zipper still enacted. Very poor quality. It's very upsetting when we can't even get a different carrier on our trip. Our cats were able to escape many times. Don't buy its honestly a waste of money. I've never written a review like this. If I can give them 0 stars, I would.

We love it as does our cat.

We paid $65 shipped and bow its 98 plus tax etc so not sure I'd pay that but definitely worth whar I paid. Perfect for vet visits etc and she uses it as a hideout at home. Great quality and less scary for her than the plastic ones. She was like spider cat trying to get her in the plastic carrier. Not going in door or through top. This one was 0 issues.

Great Quality

This is the second one I have bought. Unfortunately my dogs decided the zipper was fine to chew on and wrecked it. It is great quality and opens/closes great. It is very airy with screens all the way around, and flaps that come down. We carry two Morkies in it - 3lbs and 5lbs and they have lots of room. They like this one way better than the hard carriers.

This is a fine pet house

This is a fine pet house. The thing is, my husband and I bought this pet house for our older male Cat as a carrier to take him to the vet. He had clearly outgrown our previous carrier and seeing how much of a fuss he makes when going to the vet (i.e.:does everything from splits to spreading all limbs to avoid getting in the carrier) we figured with the size of this pet house, we should manage to get him in there... and it worked! However this is not really a carrier, it is really a tent for animals, so it is not the most sturdy and stable structure... I just wished they made some nice large size carriers in softer material- i do not like the big metal contraptions- I feel like I am putting my cat in a sort of prison cell... so not good. Overall it does the job and it is pretty to look at.
