Exceptional at Shabu Shabu and Hotpot, but Falls Short as a Grill
I absolutely love shabu shabu and Korean BBQ, and as of late I’ve been going back through some of my purchases over the years and reviewing the ones that stood out in order to hopefully help other kitchen enthusiasts make informed purchases. I purchased this multi-cooker back in February of 2016 and I've used it about every other day since then, so when I say I've gotten a lot of use out of it, that's probably a huge understatement. This multi-cooker is basically a 4-in-1 appliance for: - Shabu shabu - Grilling (such as Korean BBQ) - Hotpot - Steaming The sections for each type of cooking are all included and fit atop the heating element of the unit. The power cord isn't particularly long, but it works just fine on my counter. There is a dial on the front that you simply turn in order to turn the unit on and control the temperature. Unfortunately, no actual temperature gauges are included, but 1 is roughly "low," 2 is "medium," and 3 is "high." A glass lid with a hole is also included which helps heat your water more quickly. There is also a small orange light that turns on when the cooker is being heated. This is about the right size for one or two people to use at once, or more if you're cozy with your neighbors. :) It has a 3-quart stainless-steel pot,1-1/2-quart grill pan, steam rack, and mesh strainer as well as a see-through tempered-glass lid. It measures a compact 12 x 12 x 9 inches, and because of how it assembles, it is extremely easy to clean. I love this multi-cooker, and I wouldn't want to be without it, but I also wanted to review this item in order to let other potential buyers know that it does have some downsides. The biggest of these was that after roughly 3 weeks of use, the grilling section began to slightly warp so that it was no longer flat against the heating element. This means in practice, that only about 2/3 of the grill was really cooking. I was also unable to remove some of the food that had gotten baked onto what is supposed to be a non-stick coating. This led to me returning the product for a replacement of the same brand and type. Additionally, the grill doesn't have much of a drop off around the edges, so if you try cooking anything that is moist or fatty, you, like me, may be forced to dab the inside of the grill with a paper towel as it cooks in order to get rid of the excess grease and oil, as such, I would rate the individual 4-in-1 aspects like this: - Shabu shabu - 5/5 - Grilling (such as Korean BBQ) - 3/5 - Hotpot - 5/5 - Steaming 4/5 Essentially, the unit absolutely shines for both shabu shabu and hotpot, is good, but not exceptional as a steamer, but falls short as a grill. Now to be fair: I didn't expect a mid-range multi-cooker like this would be exceptional all around, and honestly I'm quite pleased with how it performs given the price-point. All-in-all, I would highly recommend it for shabu shabu and hot pot, as well as occasional steaming or grilling, but if you are looking for a full-on grill with features like having a drain for fat and grease, I would consider looking into a full-on grill instead. Inexpensive and effective solution for hotpot needs
Positives: Very easy to clean, as the pot inserts are removable. I also own two other tabletop grills/nabe pots which were a pain to wash because one had built-in heating element which I had to avoid getting wet, and the other (Zojirushi) was heavy and had a non-stick coating that ended up eventually flaking. I much prefer this hotpot which is stainless steel (except for the grill insert, which has a nonstick coating) and quite lightweight. It's also a smaller circumference than the Zojirushi multi cooker and a somewhat deeper height, which to me is better for hotpot cooking. As others have said, the pot heated up very quickly and I have used it multiple times to cook shabu shabu and other hotpots and stews. It's quiet and while the sides do heat up, the clearance provided by the feet prevents any damage to the table while cooking. Caveats: The cord is quite short, be prepared to have a long extension cord or surge protector to use this with if you are using it as a tabletop grill/hotpot. The inserts and lid should be washed thoroughly before use, preferably a couple of times --- after thoroughly washing the stainless insert once, I noticed a darkish residue (it looked similar to silver tarnish) while wiping it dry. Subsequent washing cleared this problem. I suspect it's a leftover part of the manufacturing process. Conclusion: The cooker seems to be well constructed especially at this price point. I have not experienced any issues with the dials or not being able to heat things properly --- maybe as suggested in other reviews, people forgot to take out the grill insert before attempting to boil water/soup in the top insert? Aside from the cooker body and lid, the other parts it comes with are: - the main stainless steel hotpot insert, a shallow grill pan insert with raised grooves for grill marks on your food, a conal structure + mesh metal basket for hotpot use. In operation, the device is silent (no noisy fans or whirring/humming noise like I've had in tabletop infrared burners) and boils cold water in under 10 minutes. The dial is also responsive to changing and maintaining temperature changes (i.e. you can tell the difference between low/medium/high settings by the boiling rate). Overall very satisfied with this hotpot, in fact more so than the more expensive Zoji I bought originally for hotpot/nabe use.

Perfect multipurpose appliance for small kitchens
So far I've used this thing at least once for each of the functions and can say I'm very happy with my purchase. I have a tiny kitchen with just a stovetop, didn't pay attention to it when I was buying the unit since I don't cook much. Living in it though has shown me that I needed something to at least heat food with. With very limited counter space, this multicooker fits easily with space for some other stuff and can be easily stored into a cabinet if I don't plan on using it for a while. The inserts stack easily on to of each other in the pot for storage. Using a packet of hot Mongolian soup base I got from an Asian supermarket, I prepped some fresh mushrooms, taro, shrimp, etc and had a wonderful hot pot dinner with friends. I didn't buy any strainers, turned out, I didn't need to since the little basket insert acted as the strainer. I've also used the steam function a couple of times for frozen veggie buns, which turned out as expected after steaming for 8 minutes according to the packaging. It took the water about 4-5 minutes to boil before I placed the veggie buns in there. Just today, I used it to grill two hot dogs and buns. The buns turned out crispy (think toasted crispy) just the way I intended when I placed the inside part down on the grill. The hotdogs had grill marks, not the same as the chargrill flavor, but I didn't expect it to have that since it's a nonstick grill. One thing I did notice was that the stainless steal pot exhibited rainbow coloring in the middle and bluish bubble looking stains near the edges. Washing in warm soapy water did nothing. A quick google search tells me it's discoloration from high heat and should not impact performance, so I didn't take off any stars for that. If this thing starts leaking I'll update my review then.

No manufacturer warranty. But works well, if you don't get a defective unit.
The enclosed booklet indicates that unless you live in US, there is no manufacturer's warranty, but thankfully, amazon.ca has 1.5 month warranty. So if you get this, test to make sure you test this shabu shabu within a week of receiving this. As for me, I used this on the last day of amazon.ca's warranty. There was no instruction in how to use this shabu shabu hot pot. After tinkering around, I was able to get the pot boiling. This was done at a spur of the moment. I had a steak slices, fishballs, and mixed vegetables. I also combined marinade chicken soya sauce, green onions, egg and five spiced powder for the sauce. BUT then it stopped heating up. After tinkering for 30 minutes, I had found out the hotpot was unplugged. I was thankful that there wasn't anything wrong with the hotpot, even though I still could return the hotpot. Who knows how long this hotpot will work for? What I like about this is that the central area allows stuff to be cooked. At least I didn't have to search for the cooked stuff. Too bad this hotpot doesn't include some accessories, like skimmer scoopers or fondue forks. For the cheaper fondue set, like Starfrit Electric Fondue Set, the pkg includes eight fondue forks. It's expensive to get skimmer scoopers.
