Ineffective load lifters for longer torsos
First let me state some of the Teton Sports gear I currently own: TETON Sports Summit2800 Ultralight Internal Frame Backpack (26.5" x 13" x 10", Silver) (backpack) - I currently use this pack for ultralight trip trips and short local overnight trips. I also use it as a travel bag at times. TETON Sports TrailHead 20F Ultralight Sleeping Bag, Orange/Grey (sleeping bag) - I currently use this for Spring, Fall, and summer trips at high elevation. TETON Sports Summit 1500 Ultralight Internal Frame Backpack (backpack) - I currently use this for day hikes where I expect to be out all day when I need to carry all the essentials and a little extra. TETON Sports Oasis 1200 Hydration Backpack, Blue/Grey (backpack) - I currently use this for day hikes where I expect to be out half or less. All of these products have served me very well on many trips over a few years now and I haven't had any issue with durability with any of them. They are a very good balance between quality and affordability, something I really appreciate and a niche that Teton Sports has really built a reputation upon. [Let me also note here that I have a REI Crestrail 48 liter pack that I currently use on my weekend (2-3 night) backpacking trips or any other trip where I need a little more space than what I can comfortably carry my Teton Sports Summit 2700.] With that all said, I was excited to add the Mountain Adventurer 4000 to my gear family. I'm planning on hiking a 70+ mile trail through the High Uintas of Utah over the course of a whole week this summer and was looking at taking just a tarp for shelter in order to not only lighten my load significantly, but to also ensure extra space for all the additional food I'll need to carry for such an extended trip. With my REI pack, I wasn't sure I could still manage it. Enter the Mountain Adventurer 4000, part of a new and what is supposed to be an improved line of Teton Sports packs recently released. First off, let me state that I love the color scheme, though I imagine it could absorb a lot of heat in the mid-day sun. Its 4000 cubic inch capacity is also supposed to translate to about 66 liters so I was hoping this pack would become my go-to pack for such extended trips where more food needs to be carried, or winter trips where bigger and puffier gear needs to be taken. I was also looking forward to having it for backpacking trips with my younger kids so as to be able to carry their food and gear needs as well and make the trail miles more doable for them. However, when I took my typical load of just my gear from my REI 48 liter pack and moved it all into the Mountain Adventurer, packing it all in the exact same way, I did not notice a significant amount of space left over. There was really only enough extra space left over to stuff about 4 to 5 liters worth of water bottles on top before just about filling out the collar. While even that extra 5 liters of space could certainly accommodate a few more days worth of food, it certainly did not appear to be close to 20 more liters of space as I was expecting. So while I'm confident it would accommodate all of my needs for a week long summer backpacking trip, I don't feel it is a big upgrade in space for accommodating very much extra gear for my kids. Still, it held promise and so I moved on with trying the fully loaded pack on. Here's where the real disappointment hit me. Having been measured with a 19 inch torso, I started with the shoulder straps adjusted up about as far up as the pack would allow me to. I found that while I was able to get an adequate length between the shoulder straps and the waist belt, the load lifters straps that suspend each shoulder strap to the top of the pack ended up being seated below my shoulders, rendering them wholly ineffective, rather than closer to an ideal 45 degrees up above the shoulder. As a result, despite being being able to cinch the waist belt snuggly around my waist, the load was still pulling down and back on my shoulders and putting undue strain across my back and neck. [Let me also note here that I was also nervous about the waist belt because I have a slim waist size of 29 to 30 inches and the spec on this pack said that minimum waist size was 33 inches. Seeing a comment saying that it could actually go down to a waist size of 28 inches, I took my chances. I can say that the spec of 33 is definitely a misprint because I was able to get it snug on my waist, albeit, I had to max out all of the slack.] I continued experiment with different adjustments on the torso length raising and lowering the shoulder straps with no better results. No matter how I configured it, I just couldn't get the load to sit right on my waist to make for a more comfortable carry. Knowing my wife has a much smaller torso size at 15 inches, I adjusted the shoulder straps down a bit and had her put it on. It looked like a much better fit on her and she confirmed it. The load lifters were up at a much better angle up and above her shoulders and she gave it a favorable initial review, even after having her walk on the treadmill at an incline for over a half hour. So, in conclusion, I will say this...While I think this pack does technically accommodate torso sizes up to 20 to 21 inches as the spec says, the load lifters fall below the shoulders at such torso lengths, making them ineffective at their job, which is to lift the bulk of the load off your shoulders and transfer that load to the waist. I also have to state here that I have to agree that the straps around the sleeping bag compartment, where one might typically strap on a foam sleeping pad, aren't really long enough to do so. These days though, most people are opting for the more comfortable inflatable pads that roll up into a much more compact size to be packed inside of a pack, so this may be a non-issue. So, had the load lifters had extra slots to adjust up to above what's already there, this pack would probably get 5 stars to start off with an initial impression, but because of the load lifter experience, I wouldn't dare take it out myself on a true backpacking trip, and have thus deducted a star. I still give it a favorable 4 stars though because of my wife's feedback and because I still have full confidence in its quality and durability and Teton Sports Customer Service team. I believe it would be a fine pack for most scouts who may need more capacity than the already popularTETON Sports Scout 3400 Internal Frame Backpack, Orange for an extended trip, such as a 50 miler that many troops embark on, or any other growing teenagers in addition to anyone else with a shorter torso size. It looks like my wife just might be keeping this pack in case she ever needs something with more capacity than what she already has with another pack that already fits her pretty well. We may also just hold on to it for our kids to graduate to as they start hitting their growth spurts and transition into their teenage years. I can see myself utilizing the nice poncho the pack came with that can double as a tarp shelter when combined with a trekking pole or two, some guy lines, and stakes. In the mean time, I'll be moving on to something else with bigger capacity for outings with our younger kids, and of course better load lifting capabilities. I'd consider the Mountain Adventurer's big brother, the Grand 5500, but I fear the positioning of the load lifter in relation the larger torso adjustments won't be much of an improvement. Instead, theTETON Sports Outfitter 4600 Ultralight Internal Frame Backpack is looking much more promising for what I'm looking for, especially since it appears to have load lifters that can be adjusted between higher and lower attachment points on the pack.

Don't Bother. Either spend more, or less, but don't spend on this one.
I took quite a while before I finally decided to write this review. If I seem a bit harsh, there is a back story, which is worth relating here. Teton has an excellent reputation for Customer Service. Several years ago I bought their Fox 5200 pack, which until today I think represents excellent value for the money. I only had two problems with that pack: 1) the lid would constantly slide forward almost every time I used it, leaving the inside exposed to rain if you didn't use the rain cover; and 2) it could not handle weight over 50lbs. It became very uncomfortable once you hit the 50lb mark and just wouldn't serve my needs any more. I contacted Teton and asked if there might be a defection on my bag that the straps pretty much collapsed around that weight, and was told (again, prompt reply, great customer service) that the Fox is the lower end bag and not really designed for such a load. They sent me a new lid (not much better) but suggested if I was carrying a lot of weight I need to upgrade to the Grand 5500. The reviews were impressive and I thought there would be a lot of additional capacity. It was an expensive mistake. The Grand 5500 is around double the price, and the increase in comfort, size and utility is negligible. Let me list my opinions on the features: Cons: -This bag gives up at around 60lbs. After 20 or 30 minutes the strap cushion collapses and you have the straps digging into your shoulders. - The waist belt does not properly grab your lumbar. I should say, my lumbar. I can't speak for everyone, but my experience is that the belt grabs my hips only, and needs constant shifting. A nightmare on hikes over 2 or 3 hours. - The top lid simply cannot stay on straight. Even with nothing in the lid pockets, it will slide forward and leave the main bag cavity exposed. Yes, there is the interior closure, but it eventually gets filled with water in the heavy rain - The flimsy plastic insert that is supposed to give some structure and help the shape of the bag closest to your back (see picture) has sharp corners that eventually tore through my bag and are now exposed. It has also lost its structure and just kind of wobbles around back there. Useless. - The Fox had lots of pockets for organization. This one has only one side pocket, a belt pocket and two on the lid. Those on the lid, of course, if they are filled, drag the lid down even further and unbalance the pack. There is the detachable pocket/pack too. I don't used that as it just gets in the way and hangs off the back, but I can see the how others would like the feature. - This pack has essentially 4 accesses to the main compartment. The top, the front, the side and the bottom (which is also the sleeping bag compartment) This means that all of my gear is now in individual dry sacks (read, more weight) rather than just putting things in their own pockets. This is a personal preference, but I think the Fox is way better organized. - The Poncho "rain fly"...what is that about? I have seen reviews of people who think its a great idea. Well, my opinion is that it's an ineffective and poorly conceived solution. I didn't have an opinion until I needed it. Firstly, I don't want to wear a poncho in the rain. I like the rain. I am in the Jungle, where its hot. The rain makes me cool. So now I have to choose to cover me and my pack, or let my pack get soaked (read above, because of the lid it will fill with rain water). In addition, the poncho is silly. It doesn't have any snaps or closures, just some tabs. That means that you have this flappy, chaotic poncho whipping about like a sail in a storm unless you tie it around your waist with a string or modify it at home. Imaging trying to climb up a muddy mountain trail in a poncho that can't even close during a storm! It really doesn't work...at all. - I have been using it for less than a year and I feel that it is not holding up very well. There are areas of wear that really shouldn't be there. Pros: - It is, for the most part, more comfortable than the Fox, by a hair. Not double, maybe 10 or 15%. - It does carry somewhat better than the Fox, another 10lbs before getting uncomfortable. - I like the side pocket, I wish there were two. I can fit an Olympus TG5 in there with room to spare. I primarily use this backpack for Weight Training. I fill it with 60 or 70lbs and walk up steep, hilly roads. This is not excessive or abusive. I have only taken it into the bush 5 or 6 times, and all of the wear so far is just water jugs filling it up. I might not be as critical if not for having been told, and having this recommended by Teton when I was quite specific about my needs. My disappointment is compounded in that I feel I was upsold something that really doesn't perform significantly better than the Fox. I don't know if I got a Lemon (I do hope so) and again I have been impressed with the Teton customer response, but it was through an email exchange with them directly that convinced me to upgrade, and I hope it is clear I feel I was, if not cheated, at least misguided that this would be worth upgrading to. Stick to the Osprey's and Gregory's, folks, if you need to go up. If not, I would still highly recommend the Fox for a casual user. UPDATE 11/20/2018: I also emailed Teton with my complaints, and, as usual, their excellent customer service responded immediately. They are sending me a new pack as a replacement (awesome!) and I will update this review after I have used it. I am hoping that mine was a lemon, and that my review, of the quality at least, will change after I have used the new one. UPDATE 9/9/2020 Teton Customer Service is Legendary. I can't believe it took so long to write this update. I tried a few times and it didn't upload on Amazon and I guess I forgot to go back and let you guys know what happened. So Teton sent me a brand new bag as well as a Backpack Cover (to resolved the problem with the Poncho flapping in the rain). They sure do their best to make the stand behind their products. I have increased the rating by one star for that, and also more experience with the bag. I won't go up more than a star, because many of the underlying problems are the same. The lid still flaps, the cushion is a bit better, but it still can't handle really heavy loads. For a kind of middle-of-the-road pack, this works, especially if you don't load it with much weight. I have since moved to a Gregory Baltoro Pro 95 and the difference is night and day. Having said that, its 2x the price, so know what you really need then make the decisions that work best for your budget and requirements.

Great daypack for any trail warrior
I love this pack. I have been using it for day trips and it has performed incredibly well. Durable, snug fit, smart layout, strap pocket is a game changer in a day pack. The only and I mean only gripe I have is that the sternum strap did pop off its mount on the pocket side. I understand that the buckle is only clipped on to a firm insert but it came off pretty easily with a slight chest flex. My Dakine daypack has a similar system and that one has seen multiple years of use and has never come close to coming off. Having said all that, I did clip it back on easily and just know now not to cinch it too tight. Love the big top opening for all the essentials. Thanks Teton, great job.

Well thought out pack
Very pleased with the pack...it is my second from Teton Sports (I have the smaller hydration day pack as well). The build quality of these packs is excellent. I like all the different attachment points in the Talus and although I was a bit worried that the adjustable torso length would not be enough for my frame it worked great. I will provide a 6 month review to update my wear and tear on it....but so far very pleased and for its price point it has features other packs in this price range sorely lack.
