Learning curve to application, but great quality sealer

I couldnt find this sealer at any of the home improvement stores locally, so I ordered on Amazon. I did a ton of research on sealers to use on painted furniture, and this one was recommended over and over again. I've never applied a sealer, and there was a learning curve. The directions say to use a brush or applicator. An applicator was recommended by several people, so I tried that first. It was messy and it was hard getting even coverage. I switched to a brush and found that to be much easier. I still had to be careful on the edges of the pieces I was sealing, making sure it didnt clump. I like that it goes on white-ish so you can see where it's going. It dried pretty quickly, making putting on subsequent coats easier. Overall, I am happy with the results. The furniture has stood up to some abuse by my kids, and you would never know it.

Not happy

I bought this after reading a good write up for this product for refinishing furniture. I had two brand new pieces that were scratching too easily. Well, it was easy to apply, but the first coat left significant brush marks (using foam brush). Coats 2-4 left a bumpy, milky finish. I then got some advice online of how polish and smooth polyurethane. This did not go well. What a nightmare. I was able to recover, but the end result is basically like modge podge.

Varathane is the only poly I use

I use Varathane products on everything. I like the satin because it has a sheen but not a shine. I created a new countertop, over the laminate in my laundry room, by covering it with fabric then adding 3 coats of Varathane. It looks fantastic and is waterproof and durable. My new project is creating my own wood stains by using poly as the base and adding my own pigments. Why buy lots of cans of stain just to get the right color? I've painted my mantle and it looks beautiful. The next project is painting over that golden oak 80s color on my bathroom cabinets. This is a quality product that has a thousand uses and lasts a long time. One suggestion: better packaging. The can arrived, dented, and partially opened with some of the contents spilled and crusted on the can and lid. A little tape and more packing material would be helpful.

Streaked with layer one (chalk paint furniture)

I used this product on my chalk painted cabinet. I applied the first coat with a foam brush (as recommended on label). The product went on very smooth and the smell was not overbearing. After four hours my coat was dry but is badly streaked. After two light sands it's still very noticable. This will require some more elbow grease and possibly a new paint job to resolve (not happy). Luckily, I only painted the top as a test. I found the product to be easily removed from brushes as well as the container I poured product into. Wish it would have worked on the first go. I'm going to try a synthetic brush next (will update review). **Updated** I was able to achieve a non-streaked top after two heavy handed sands with a fine grain paper on the streaked finish. I applied another coat of poly but this time with a high quality synthetic brush. After it dried I again sanded with 400 grit. I applied a third coat of poly to its final finish as seen in the non streaked photo. I'm happy with this product so far and look to continuing the rest of my project with it, synthetic brush in hand.
