The right tool for the job...

I am writing this review to express my satisfaction with the Kwikset Cylinder Removal Tool. I needed to remove the cylinder from my Kwikset doorknob in order to rekey it, and this tool made the job quick and easy. The tool is well-made and sturdy, and it fits snugly into the cylinder, making it easy to turn. I needed help with this tool

As an Great Grandmother, I was not able to hold the "pointed" end of the tool. I used a pair of needle-nose vice grip pliers and that allowed me the leverage to insert the vee end of the tool at an angle to remove the Kwikset key holder in order to reverse the way the key goes into the knob. My husband, an elderly mechanic who could fix anything, had given up on removing the key part of the knob and told me to call a locksmith. Although we won this fight, we did damage to the knob removing the shaft and now the lock sometimes does not work... We watched 4 different YouTube videos to learn how to remove the different parts, and not all of them were correct in their directions!

Works

So I wish this was included in my door knob. Kwikset suggests hanging the knob with the key hole upside down but I was not happy with that. This allowed me to remove the barrel without damaging it and replace it so it is right side up.

Right tool for the job - wish it came with the door knob

Depending on your installation, right or left hand side door knob, and whether you happened to receive a door knob pre-configured for the opposite, you will need this tool to flip the cylinder so that the key doesn't have to be inserted upside down. There are youTube videos demonstrating this with a screwdriver, but I couldn't get that to work. Using this tool, it worked immediately. It would be nice if they just included it with the door knob in the first place, or otherwise allowed you to order the door knob preconfigured to your need.

This is how you fix those door locks with the upside down key slots

I wish I would have known about this tool earlier. Buying door lock sets you have to be aware of how the door opens, left hand swing, right hand swing and whether the door opens out or in. Most door knob sets are designed one way and the only way to change it if your door is different is with the tool. If you have or have seen a door knob with the key slot is upside down this is the tool to fix it

It is necessary

Necessary and cheap. It is kind of ridiculous that something so simple and cheap is necessary just to change the "hand" or a key-in-knob set, but it is, so get it if you want your keyway to be in the proper orientation in you lockset. No instructions, but YouTube is a great resource.

Easy to use once you find instructions on how to use it.

This tool is used to rotate the cylinder so that your key hole is not upside down. It can be done without this tool but it is a lot easier with it. It did not come with instructions so you have to look online for instructions. This works for the knob type handles. DOES NOT WORK WITH LEVER TYPE HANDLES (ex. Lido). For the lever type you need a small flat head screwdriver to pull out a pin holding the cylinder in place. The description of this product should have mentioned this.
