Best replacement for Nutone 9425F

I recently used 2 of the Broan 164 heater/fan units to replace 2 very old Nutone 9425F heater/fan units in my bathrooms. It's the closest that I could find and the replacement was pretty simple. The hole in the ceiling had to be enlarged a bit. It works well and is much quieter than old ones. I recommend the Broan.

It's okay...

Installed during major bath remodel. Changed shower tub area to wet room style and no longer have a shower door to close. The tub/shower "wet" area is about 6' x 9'. We felt the heat may be a necessary addition and it seems to work pretty good (using with 2 - 250 watt heat lamps). Ceiling height is 8 feet and not sure how well it would do with something higher. Also, in open wet room concept, if cold natured you should consider a forced air electric heater. Need to mount from attic if not new construction. Also should control heat lamp 1, heat lamp 2 and fan separately. That will a 3 rocker switch (Broan sells these) or 3 separate switches and likely additional wiring. When operating heat for a short period of time the heat builds up in the housing and the fan turns on automatically to remove that heat (obviously with the fan switch off). If heat lamps are left on, the on-off fan frequency is a little excessive, as is the fan noise.

Works as described.

My high bathroom ceiling made me go with the dual bulb heater. A low ceiling would be a good candidate for a single bulb or for a dual unit using one bulb for heat and the other for lighting. One issue when unpacking was the fan being slightly out of place which caused rubbing on the fan housing. This was easily fixed bending the motor back into place. You should check fan movement before installing, but this can be fixed at any time with the bulbs out. I opted for the heat lamps on a timer and the fan on a separate switch. According to the instructions, the fan needs to be wired on way or the other. There's a temperature sensor inside the housing that will turn on the fan if it gets too hot in the housing. So don't decide not to wire the fan because you don't want or need it. Use a separate switch like I did and not turn it on and have the safety thermostat in the circuit. Wiring is straightforward and if you can't figure it out, get an electrician. The box for wiring is small and not much extra on the wires going into it. I'd use tape around the wire nuts to keep them on since the attic is the last place you want to check wiring in the summer. I used the knockout on top of the wiring box because it was easiest to have the wiring exit and made it easier to move unit around for installation. YOU SHOULD make all wiring connections in the box before you mount it to the joists. So far a simple unit that works fine. I'd buy it again. I can't find any difference between Broan and Nutone. So I bought the cheapest one. UPDATE. The temps in my area got up to 50 degrees and the fan temperature sensor turned the fan on (like it's supposed to). I think I'll use the fan when I have the lamps on. Two reasons 1. You shouldn't use the temperature sensor to turn the fan on and off (my opinion as an hvac tech). This appears to be a safety control for high temps. 2. Using the fan will validate that it's working. If the fan isn't working, the temperature sensor can't turn it on even if it wanted to. I don't see any high temperature safety cutout on the unit, but I'll double check to make sure. Either way, using the fan when both lamps are on seems to be the safest way to operate.

NOT the same as the old one, but a good unit

Despite what many here have claimed this product is not the same unit as the older versions. You can not simply switch fans, for example. The old units had two screws holding the blower unit in place, one on the top of the housing and one on the side beneath the blower itself. The new one has them both on the side, meaning you can not take the new one out and install it into your old fixture. Orientation of the external components has changed as well, the vent discharge chute faces a different direction and the electrical hookup is in a different location. If your wiring doesn't have a lot of slack, or if rigid vent pipe was used you will have to replace the wiring or the vent pipe, or both. Additionally, while the same approximate width, the new unit is well over an inch longer than the older units, requiring additional cutting of the ceiling if the unit is replacing an old one. That being said, the unit works as described. Installation, while not easy, is not overly difficult. If you have access to the space above the room where the unit is being installed you can complete a new installation with no need for drywall or plaster repair. The fan is fairly quiet once installed, about what I'd expect from a unit in this price range. It can be wired in numerous ways to give complete control over the individual lights and the fan, and by installing different bulbs you can use it as a light, a heater, or both. Two things to note: 1. There is no template provided, you will have to make your own to more easily facilitate marking the ceiling where you need to cut. I recommend drilling a small hole in the ceiling (from the attic above), centered between the joists, then centering your own template on that mark. 2. The instructions claim there is a protective cover to be used when plastering around the unit, this cover is supposedly marked on the box and instructions are supposedly on the box as well. Neither existed. It is possible they were an extra piece of packaging, the unit I received was previously opened so I can't say with certainty that I received everything that was supposed to be in the box.

Horrible units

Perhaps the worst heat lamp fixture ever. The installed fan is for cooling the fixture and switches on with a thermostat as required. Often. It was annoying to begin with but as time has past (about 2 years since install) the fans (I have 2) have degraded and sound like industrial ventilators. They can be unplugged in the fixture and all seems well until the heat fuse blows and the fixture goes dark. How to fix that I have yet to discover.
