I'm in constant pain, and the most comfortable bed I've ever tried is the Coleman Twin Quickbed with a memory foam mattress topper on top of it. The air mattress gives the perfect combination of give with firm (but not hard), and the memory topper evens out the inherent lumpiness of any air mattress, while also stopping the air mattress from sucking all the heat out of my body (something you don't notice much using a sleeping bag, but definitely feel through sheets!). The bit where you put air in has come a long way since air mattresses of my childhood. For one thing, it's large, and for another, it works in two steps. You extend the valve and put the pump nozzle in, then open the inner valve to add air. When you're done, you just leave the pump end in the valve and push, and voila, it's closed so no air come out when you remove the pump. Perfect inflation every time! The larger valve opening also means emptying goes much faster. Because I'm using this at home, all year long, I bought an electric Coleman air pump that plugs into the wall. When I saw in the instructions that you could only use if for 30 minutes at a time, I wasn't impressed. Then I actually used it. Wow! It inflated the mattress so quickly that you could do mattresses for the entire family and still have loads of time left on that 30 minute deadline! I 'top up' the mattress every couple of weeks for optimal comfort/pain reduction, and it literally takes less than a second with the electric pump. If I weren't so sensitive, I'm sure I could go quite a bit longer between top-ups. The only downside--and this seems to be an issue with every air mattress brand--is the mattress can develop a big lump of air where something inside breaks down. My first Quickbed lasted through 7 months of using it every night. I didn't pursue a replacement, as I felt like I'd already had very good value for my money. (It was the equivalent of going camping every weekend for 2 years.) My second one though, I only used for two months before a bulge appeared. Past the Amazon return period, but there's a big sheet of paper inside the box with a number for contacting Coleman. They asked me to send a photo of the bulge, of the box, and proof of the order and it's date. They processed this immediately, and are sending me a replacement Quickbed for free. Not being zippy Amazon delivery, it'll take about a month to get here, but I picked up a spare on sale. I know the Coleman Quickbed is something I'll buy repeatedly to use long term, and have a mattress that's always at the peak of comfort for a very small fraction of the cost of anything offering comparable comfort and pain management. If we have a really hot summer, I'm looking forward to using something thinner on top, and letting the air mattress help keep me cool at night. Given the comfort and the excellent customer service when there was a problem, I have no reservations in recommending the Coleman Quickbed. Just save the box, contact sheet, and your receipt. The warranty is good for a full year. (A note if you're planning to use this on your bed at home--I placed a second foam mattress topper UNDER the mattress to protect it from any abrasions that might be caused by contact with the bed frame.)
