Plug & Play Performance - But Failed In Less Than 2 Years

Update: 4/10/23 Display started working intermittently last season but breaks actually worked. Getting ready for a trip this season and the display is gone. Reached out to their support on this. Knocked a star and hopefully they have some positive news for me. - - - My only experience with brake controllers but this thing was easy to install and use. Followed the initial settings and haven't had to manually change after about 1,500 miles towing approximately a 4,000 lb. travel trailer. From the gulf coast, Appalachians and east coast, and through thunderstorms, had full confidence with this controller. Wish it had an off button when not in use but I just unplug it.

Easy Install and a solid product

The media could not be loaded. I installed this on a Toyota Tundra 2005 truck with the factory towing kit. The Curt is basically a plug and play on factory installing towing packages. I ordered a cable here on Amazon for the Curt that connects to the factory Toyota plug under my dash. Once I locked the plug and mounted the Assure I was ready for use. The. Curt’s can be set to run in auto mode which is how it comes from the factory. There are two dip switches on the back to change setting. The front of the unit had a display that tilts which is nice. You have a plus and minus buttons for setting the amount of brake gain. There is a manual override on the ride side on top. If you do not have a towing package. You can wire in the unit. I would first make sure I had the round 7 pin light/brake connector at the back of vehicle then go from there. If you have the 4 pin you will need to manually wire in and it is a little more work. Overall the Curt Assure is a really easy to use and install product in my opinion.

Recommended Brake Controller

This is a modern fully featured brake controller with some sophisticated features, yet maintains a simple and easy to use interface. Unlike cheaper models this one features a triple axis motion sensing accelerometer. It will dial in the proper braking force much more accurately than simpler sensors. Curt offers a wide range of brake controllers from more simpler versions to Bluetooth capable ones that sync to your smartphone. I personally like this one as it is simple to install and use and doesn't need any other device to function. If you purchase the proper wire harness adapter for your vehicle make, installation will be plug and play. The design of this controller is very well done. It is much more compact than I thought it would be. This allows it to be mounted in a variety of locations without being noticed. I good place is where you can see the screen and be able to press the manual braking button. The tillable display makes it more versatile in placement. I find the display is bright and easy to read day or night. After installation there are only a few things to perform to get the most out of this controller. A few test runs with your trailer on a level road at low speed with get it setup properly. It is really easy to do and also gets you familiar with basic trailer knowledge if this is your first time towing. Overall I have been very impressed with this controller and find it an excellent choice for most cars, SUVs or trucks that don't already have a controller. It is powerful and can support up to a 4 axel trailer. It is more than twice the price of the most inexpensive versions but less than half the price of the most expensive versions. I think it is in a good price range. Cheapest isn't always a better choice when it comes to braking and towing safety. This controller gets a full 5 stars from me. Better than expected.

Never Worked

Mine was dead out of the box. I stuck with Curt because I already had the Curt plug installed for this to plug into, but went with the 51110, and it's working fine. Also, for the additional $$$, this unit was very flimsy and even had a flimsy button to apply full braking. I like the slide-switch on the 51110 unit MUCH better. I wish I had gone with a different brand, as even the Curt 51110 has cheap adjustable switches, one a turn wheel and the other a slider switch. They're so cheap that, if you slide a piece of paper over them, you'll move the switch, so, once you've got the thing adjusted, you've got to be ultra-careful that nothing rubs up against it. I've seen other brands that just have MUCH better adjustment switches on them. When I change cars, I'll definitely be searching brands OTHER than Curt.

Garbage never worked

Cheap and never worked. It lit up but trailer brakes never worked. Swapped it out for a different brand and all was good . Do not buy
