Splotchy messy paint, cheap lightweight materials, non-fitting accessories! Disappointing!

I purchased this as a Mother's Day gift for my mother. She had been collecting gnomes, and her favorite was a decent sized standard gnome she had received on sale for being chipped. I decided it would be a good idea to get a hand crafted Design Toscano gnome for her. I admit I wanted it to be her new favorite. I felt something was off as soon as I felt the actual package. It was VERY light for the size and shape of the gnome. My fears were realized when it was opened on Mother's Day. The lightweight figure had been damaged during shipping, the arm for holding the lamp cracked down the middle - not even on a seam. The hand itself did not hold the lamp tight, so it flopped over unable to stand up straight. The lamp housing is made of cheap bendable metal, which I had to force back together to house the t-light designed to sit in it's base. The worst offense was the paint job It was far from professional, with splotches and uneven coatings all around the gnome. Here and there the painter had decided to splotch white pain and glitter, I'm guessing in an attempt to make the gnome seem "wintered". It just looked messy. The red coat ran into the hat, splotched over the gloves and shoes, and the beard ran into the shirt. It looked like a third grade art project. For the price I was very disappointed on all aspects of this "lovingly hand crafted gnome".

A forever mine piece

Love this guy!!! He is so adorable and much bigger in person than I thought. Wish they had more with same attributes. I would buy them all.

Love the gnome! Paint job is not the best...

I have always had a love for gnomes. In Europe if you have one outside, it is supposed to bring your house good luck. When I opened this I was not that impressed with the paint job. It looks like a few areas were spray painted white. I can’t tell if it is supposed to be that way but it is in areas that do match so I am guessing it is a bad paint job. For that I am deducting a star. Over all though, this thing is adorable! I have had it sitting outside my front door which is under a porch so it is protected from the elements. It has not had any issues but it only has been exposed to the cold weather, no rain at all since it is under a covered porch. I’ve noticed a lot of people looking at it. I am not sure if they are interested in it as well or think there is a camera in it. It stands almost two feet tall so it is impressive. I love the candle holder he holds. You can open it up and place a tea light in it. I have a lot of battery operated tea lights and they put off a nice glow on this fella. If it changes in color or texture I will be back to update my review. I am impressed so far and love my gnome.

Love this little/Big guy. The colors are holidays colors, but he can be placed anywhere all year. The red color is not bright. A distressed red, looks good. I’m putting him outside, and will be moving him around. Looks great on my front porch where he is covered if it rains (I live in Ca.) I’m thinking of spraying him with a varnish to make him more weather proof. On his hat there are Three places’s that are painted whitish squares that look like snow with sparkles on them. They seem to reflect light at night. As you can see on the front of his hat is cute heart with a gold design on each side. His big nose is peeking out under his big hat, with a gold pipe hanging out of the side of his mouth. In his left hand is a black and gold bag, that looks like its his Loot. In the right hand is the metal shepherd hook and lantern. I put a little battery tea light in the lantern that goes on for 6 hrs automatically, and turns off automatically. (bought the lights on Amazon) Underneath the lantern is a large type of screw that lets you put a light inside. I would Not put a tea light candle in this. it would burn the lantern .. To hang the lantern on the shepherd hook, you have to gently open the lantern hook, then attach to shepherd hook. Not a big deal. I notice the bottom of the red shepherd hook hits his black shoes, and leaves a little mark. I put a little silicone sticky dot on the foot which took care of the problem. This is so cute and is a good size. 5 Stars

BIG!

When the box for this arrived, I couldn't imagine what was in it. It was huge! This is a statement gnome. It's large and will look nice on a front porch (though I'm using it indoors). I like that the colors are somewhat subdued because it makes it feel richer. The gnome's face is adorable and his detachable red light pole and lamp are well-made. I'm using a battery tea light in this and it works perfectly. He's the only Christmas decoration I have out right now - the rest will go up around him after Thanksgiving. Really cute and definitely worth the money. Recommend.

The one i received came in excellent condition and completely undamaged

My first ever gnome and probably my last however, he's certainly and interesting gnome. After reading some of the other reviews, I notice people have picked up on the 'poor paint quality' and 'fragile'. The one i received came in excellent condition and completely undamaged. As for the paint job, yes it's a little messy but I like it; I feel it gives the gnome rustic and individual qualities compared to the factory-sprayed perfect ones. All in all I think this is a cute gnome, with a good size and adds nice decoration to the garden. The only issue is the price (too much!) and the poor fitting of the tealight holder.

Overpriced with Packaging Issues - Still Cute!

Moe has become one of the family and is much admired and a talking point for random passersby and neighbours. So why the 3 stars? Well, it's the price point as I think you could find similar in a Christmas shop around the £30 mark. The paint quality isn't great, sort of shabby chic but I'm not sure if that is the manufacturer's intention. Packaging wasn't great as I could hear ominous rattling before I opened the box and the polystyrene enclosure had broken off in several locations. The rattling turned out to be the lantern which wasn't wrapped separately which explains the broken glass (plexiglass) in one of the panes. The manufacturer really needs to rethink the packaging of such high priced goods. Nevertheless we still love Moe.

Toscano Moe

Not really a gnome person. This one seems okay but not inspiringly so. It's very expensive for what it is. It's not very well made. Paint job lacks. In the garden it would be easy purloin it - no weight. However, I can't imagine why anyone would... Some people like gnomes and collect them. Not me. I'll find this one a good home somewhere else - likely the North Pole.

Expensive plastic gnome

I have a confession to make – I don't like gnomes. Now I know that will upset some people, but I prefer gargoyles; weird I know. Anyhow, I've been wanting to get my neighbour a gnome for his garden and this one is perfect. It is big – almost two feet tall, so he's not a gnome to be messed with, but he's also light enough to lift with one hand. The photograph makes him look shinier than he is – it's not quite a matt finish, more of a sheen than a shine, an the paint job is not of high quality. What I thought was primer, particularly on his hat is actually meant to be patches of snow with a slight sparkle. What I do like is his lantern which holds a little tea light perfectly – I use a battery operated one for safety. One problem with the lantern pole, though, is that it slides downwards out of the gnome's hand and onto the ground, so if you pick him up, the lantern slides all the way down which is a nuisance when you're not expecting it – I've stuck the end onto his boot with bluetack to keep it in place. This wasn't packaged well at all, a lot of the polystyrene was broken and wafted all over the house when the box was unfastened. I had no idea that plastic gnomes could be so expensive! I honestly don't believe he is worth the price.

Moe was a big hit!

We ordered Moe for my mother in law for Christmas and she absolutely loved him! She has a LOT of gnomes so it is hard to find one that is different enough from the others, but still will add to her collection. I purchased the battery operated tea light candles and they were terrific. Looks exactly like a candle, but safe and easy. If I have one complaint it is the way the lantern opens. It is not easy to twist the bottom and know that it is back in place. More than once I dropped the tea light candle because I thought it was closed but it wasn't. A stopper or something similar would go a long way to making it easier. But as far as looks go, it was very well received. She also loved the size, so that is another plus! The cost may be prohibitive for some, but I save for Christmas gifts so that is also something to think about. All in all a great gift!
