Good filter for cheap money
After reading other reviews I decided to replace the carbon before using it and to be honest the amount of filter fiber they give you is just not anywhere near enough but the product itself worked fine and did it's job well after replacing the carbon and adding some extra filter fiber. Was definitely worth the money. Keep mind you do have to buy the low power air pump, air line, and backflow valve to make this complete and usable If you don't already have that stuff on hand.

Some modifications makes this a great filter
I purchased this for my 2.5 gallon beta tank. I wasn't really pleased with the filter that came with it and this filter is a large improvement with some modifications. First off the filter must sit completely flat to function best and have a fair amount of gravel over it to keep the current down for your fish. I also put a small plant on top of the base. The plant that comes with this is cheap, tacky, and will rip your fishes fins, throw it away. The base has a diameter of about 6 inches so make sure you have room for it. I put 2.5 pounds of gravel in my 2.5 gallon tank to make sure the base was completely covered and held down. The carbon that comes with the filter is junk and needs to be replaced. Pop the black lid off, take out the moss, dump the carbon, fill it with your own carbon I use (Marineland PA0373 Black Diamond Activated Carbon, 40-Ounce, 1134-Gram ), replace the moss and snap the lid back on and run water through it. I cut the clear tubing down by an inch so that it would be the proper height in my tank. Then I usedDeep Blue Professional ADB12296 Silicone Air Tubing for Aquarium, 25-Feet andSingle Way Aquarium Control Air Water Flow Lever Valve along with the lowest powered air pump you can find to complete the set up.

Use for other projects.
I cut out the base and mount to an under-gravel filter to make a slow-moving Plenum for use in any aquarium.

It works great, low quality charcoal and cotton
The little thing works great but I did as the other posters suggested and bought a better quality charcoal. I think there should be more cotton in the bottom though, what they sent was a tiny pinch. I will replace that with a greater quantity when I clean the tank. I have this in my 2.5 gallon tank with about 2 inches of rocks. It works great. My husband unknowingly bought me a tiger barb after I sent him for a couple of danios but the little guy seems to be doing ok!

DO NOT GET THIS!!!!! SAVE YOUR FISH!!!
DONT GET IT!!! I was told to try this and decided to get it. Did the typical filter prep and rinsed the actual filter/carbon part with water and made sure it ran clear for a good 3 minutes before I used it. I put it in my tank, filled it with my aquarium water and all my minerals, did a water check and everything was perfect!! Started the filter and instantly little black flakes started shooting out the top! So I redid the whole process a 2nd time. Seemed good! Until I put my fish and snails and shrimp in. My pleco bumped it and what happens? Black specks... and within minutes my tank was super black and cloudy. I pulled all my fish out but apparently not fast enough (only in there about 2 minutes while I prepped to get them out.) My pleco lasted the longest but my other fish died... the pleco made it about an hour. I took them to my aquarium store and was told they had CARBON PARTICLES in their mouths, and in their gills and stuff... they suffocated from the carbon... I attempted to try to get the filter to work in an empty tank I had and still... for a whole week with daily full changes and even 25% water changes the filter wouldnt give up!!! I'm out all the money for this, and all I have left that survived is 3 of my shrimp and 2 snails! NO fish!! PLEASE SAVE YOUR FISH AND DO NOT GET THIS FILTER!!! EVER!!! I TRIED EVERYTHING!!!!

Difference between 1 gal and 2 gal filter
I haven't set up this filter yet or used it but I did order both the 1 gallon and 2 gallon to see the difference. 1 gallon is 4 inches in diameter... 2 gallon is 5.25 inches in diameter. The actual filter size is the exact same on both, which makes me think there is really no difference between them? The tube is longer on the 2 gal. and the base is wider but other than that it’s the EXACT same as the one gal. Base being wider doesn’t bring any benefit either because it’s just plastic.

Great for my Betta tanks
I was delighted to find these small undergravel filters as well as replacement cartridges. I have 3-gallon Betta aquariums that came with filters that create too much current for the large finned Bettas. The undergravel filters do a very good job of keeping the tanks clean. I would have given them a 5 star rating but I wasn't fond of the little plastic plant. I popped those off and replaced them. Note: you do have to use a pump and tubing with these filters. I use splitters and regulators to control the air flow to each tank. I'll buy more of these filters as I acquire more Bettas.

One-Of-A-Kind and super functional.
I live undergravel filters and this was exactly what I needed for my 3.5 gallon cylinder betta tank. (It may be a tad undersized for my tank, but I’ve never found a larger version of this design). The filtration that came with the tank kit obscured a lot of the tank, and this system allows me to see everything. As others have stated: the plastic decor is too sharp for fish with delicate fins, and you will want to have replacement filter media (I use combo carbon/zeolite to help prevent ammonia spikes that can occur suddenly in small-volume tanks). I plan to modify the airline hookup a little bit so I can feed an air stone into the bubbler tube from underneath for finer air bubbles and (hopefully) a quieter sound. It can be pretty gurgley. That said: this is an excellent design for small bowls and circular tanks.
