Better with electronic chemical reader
The basic kit requires you to visually compare a prepared soil sample (after adding the appropriate powder from a capsule) with a transparent color swatch on one of the containers. Frankly, I've never been good at this. The soil samples always seem too cloudy, even after letting them separate for over a day (instructions are 30 mins to 24 hours,. so I beat that). I am not able to make a good match. What I do have is the electronic meter that you can get from Rapitest. With this, you get a set of test tubes, mix the watery soil sample, add the appropriate powered to test for phosphorus, nitrogen, and potash. Then pop the test tube into the meter, press the appropriate button and the meter lights up saying that chemical is surplus, adequate, or lacking. This works much better for me than the visual match. In fact, I only got this kit to replenish the powder capsules. BTW, I also don't find the pH test provided with this kit to work all that well. For acidity/alkalinity I use a Rapitest soil meter. With this meter you stick a metal probe into the soil and simply read off the pH. Works way better and allows easy testing across different parts of the garden. I started using the Rapitest kits a few years ago and, after the indicated adjustments to the garden (this year: added sulfur to lower the pH) I'm getting a much better harvest. So, the chemical capsules are well recommended, Other products from Rapitest are well recommended. But I don't find using the color matching to work for me.

These things are pretty cool
I don’t know how accurate they are but these pill testing things saved me on where my garden is sitting for nutrients. I checked the first time in the beginning of winter and all of the color testers for the dirt didn’t even change so my dirt was effectively dead. I got fertilizer spread it and checked it every month until repidtest testers finally changed colors that literally all winter but they saved me. Now it’s spring and my vegetables look so much better. I’ll be getting thing again

Clever design
This kit uses color-coding to be sure you put the right things in the right place. The instructions are clear. I had two small problems - the capsules that hold the powder needed for each test are hard to open, especially when you have such a small target where it needs to end up. Some type of funnel to insert in the opening that would give you a wider area to disperse the chemicals would be helpful. Also, the four chambers have a very small footprint and they are easy to knock over when you are trying to open the capsule. It would help to have a plastic base that could hold the chamber upright during that process. The charts that describe best conditions for many plants were very helpful.

A Handy Tool For Starting A New Garden Area
This product is affordable and can be used several times over. It's definitely handy to have if you are looking to start planting in a new area of your yard, or need to know what your soil composition looks like after planting from last year.

Great STEM project
I bought this product to fix my vegetable garden this year. However I asked my 7 year old grandson who loves science to help me with it. It was easy for him to use (except pulling apart the tablets, which I kind of had a hard time with) he loved it, we found out what my garden was lacking, and it was a great project to do together. We were both satisfied.

For the money, it does the job
I see other reviews on here talking about "send your soil in to a lab" or other alternatives to this product. Fact is, if you were willing to spend the money to send your soil to a lab, you probably wouldn't be buying this. Probably like you, I bought this because it's cheap and it'll give you a basic idea of what's going on in your garden. Here's how it works: You get 4 vials, one for soil pH, and one each for Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K). Essentially, you place the directed amount of soil/water mixture into each vial, and add the contents of the corresponding color-coded capsule. The capsules look like pills, the type you can pull apart and the contents spill out. After you empty the capsule into the vial, you place the rubber cap on the vial, shake and let it sit for the specified amount of time. All the quantities and times are clearly listed in the manual. Each vial has a color chart that is near your soil sample window which allows you to compare the color to the chart. This is how you know where your soil stands as far as pH, N, P and K. I've seen some reviews on here saying it's "impossible" to empty the capsules into the vials because they're too small. True, they're small but if you twist them and carefully pull them apart over the vial it's really pretty easy. If you're elderly or have trouble holding your hands still (or you're just spastic), it might be a task for you but it's still doable. It's really not very difficult. I've tested my soil maybe 10 times using this product, and it's never let me down. It doesn't give you an exact number or anything, but any time I've shown low on something, I amended the soil and a few days later it tested fine and the plants looked healthier. It's not extremely precise, but it's reliable and it will definitely tell you if there is something dangerously askew in your garden. My suggestion to the guy that only uses the lab is that either he got a defective one, or he's not cleaning them properly after each use. You should clean them with water thoroughly after each use and don't mix them up. You don't want to use the pH vial for the K test, or any other variant. Keep them clean, follow the directions and don't mix and match. My only complaint is that the vials can be knocked over easily as they have an oddly poor center of gravity. Once the cap is on, who cares. But, when you're filling them or trying to empty the capsule into them, it's pretty easy to knock them over and that's just a big bag of bollox. Anyhow, to sum up, for the money, this product can really, really help. If you're looking for something more precise then spend some more money or send to a lab like the other guy said. If you just want to make sure everything is generally good in your garden, this will probably suit you just fine. Hope this helps

Great kit.
I gave accurate results, and I was able to get the soil in my garden amended properly for my plants to grow quite vigorously!

Not much good for phosphate
I bought this specifically to test for phosphate. In principle I found the testing procedure well described in the instructions and fairly easy to carry out - as some have mentioned it is quite tricky to open the capsule of reagent and get it all into the test chamber without spilling. However I found it impossible to get results for the phosphate test. The powder reagent didn't seem to dissolve properly leaving a cloudy test solution, and also tended to form a precipitate of dark/blue black flakes - this made it difficult/ impossible to do a colour match. I did contact the manufacturer and although they replied they said that they couldn't help. It's a US kit and while the basic kit was delivered at a reasonable price it seems impossible to get replacement reagent capsules delivered to the UK at a reasonable price.

It's a con
I bought this unit because it was in the top 3 of reccomended pH testers. But you cannot buy the capsules in the UK, I emailed the makers in America and they cannot give me a suppler in Europe even. So do not buy this white elephant.

Hard to pour the powder in the chamber. other than that fine.
Ok I put "accurate at five stars" although I have no actual way of knowing but the results were similar to what I'd expect and I tested potted soil so it was reasonably controlled. However it is quite hard to use. the capsules are filled with powder, you are supposed to open the capsules into a tiny chamber, which would be at least possible if they were only half filled, because you could open it then pour. I tried just clipping the top end of the capsule with scissors however I still managed to spill some of the powder because it is filled to the brim. The only thing I can think of to do is open it in a large container (where you can spill it) and then use a spatula or pour it in which you would have to probably do something with another type of testing kit anyway. However it is quite cheap so there is that to factor in.

Ok for soil only
It's ok for giving you an idea of what's going on in ordinary garden soil, which is what it's sold for, but it does not give quantitative results, only a subjective 'too little, enough, too much' sort of guide, and only measures over a narrow range (for example pH only from 4.5 to 7.5), so wasn't able to give me the information I needed to test the quality of a soil amendment (vermicompost) with much higher quantities of some nutrients and more potential pH variability. Getting the powder out of the capsules and into the reaction chamber without spilling is very tricky, but I liked having it already measured out.

Doesn't Work
All the test results indicated deficiency in N and P, even when I tested fertiliser as benchmark. A waste of time and money.
