okay but less substantial than it might be
Editorial update after one week: Warning! This unit has "notches" for each of the angle positions, it is NOT on a sliding scale. Be sure you get the notching correct before you tighten it up, or you might ruin the notch setting. If you do not get the notch setting correct, the handlebar will wobble ever so slightly. Original review: This stem could have larger diameter bolts, which would make tightening to the required tensions both easier and more secure-feeling. As it is, the smaller bore bolts are at risk of being stripped when you are really tightening them, which you have to do. Remember, this is the unit that both holds the handle-bar in place (top bracket) and holds the steering mechanism true (bottom bracket). The bolts on the fixed stem I took off my Dawes Haymaker were burly and at least twice as large -- and you could tighten them with confidence -- not so this device, though it seems to be holding okay, hopefully I will not have to readjust ever. The angle-adjustment bolt is the same diameter, and holds a lot of weight, or could. Doesn't give me the confidence I want. I got this unit because like everyone else says, too, despite the bike being the right size for me, I wanted a more upright posture, I can put my leg down to stabilize a slide or stand-out from a flip-over better in the upright position, both due to my age (66) and the fact that I am commuting over snowy and plowed sandy, gravelly, streets and sidewalks, often with packed snow and ice on them. I am going to shop for another one for my 29er, probably not this one.

I wish I didn't need this, but I'm very thankful to have it
Because I've been having shoulder pain, I wanted to bring my bars up and in to reduce strain. Since I wasn't sure what position would be right or how long I'll face this, I wanted an adjustable stem. It is heavier because it has that joint in it. It does of course take (actually two sizes) hex wrenches to install and adjust. It does NOT require disassembly of the handlebars and I did NOT require additional spacer rings for the stem. So I was able to install it myself without complications. It is marked for torque, but the hex bolt sizes are appropriate to the torque required so I had no problem showing reasonable restraint and I did not use a torque wrench. In use it was totally stable and I never questioned that in any way as I rode. And since you're such a nice person, no, it didn't eliminate my shoulder pain, but I was able to ride three hours without feeling like I was re-injuring my inflamed joint.

Raises Handlebars
If you want your handlebars to be closer to you, you have three choices: Get some high rise handlebars, get a (straight) stem extender, or get one of these adjustable stems. I ended up doing all three. I bought a new set of handlebars with a little higher rise, along with a stem extender in hopes that it would do the trick. Those two products helped, but my handlebars still weren't quite high enough. So I bought this adjustable stem to add to the mix, and now my handlebars are the perfect height, as well as a little closer to me. This is easy to install and easy to adjust. If you are a shorter person that just wants your handlebars to be a little higher and closer, this product alone may do the trick. I am pretty tall though, with long legs and I need to have my seat pretty high. That puts the handlebars further away, so I needed all the help I could get!

Cheaper than trial and error, but ultimately not a long term solution
I torqued the bolts (all seven of them) to the point I was afraid they would snap. I couldn't get this to stop creaking, clicking, and slipping. The main issue is the adjustable part of the stem is impossible to tighten enough to get it to hold completely solid. The pieces are grooved or indexed to keep it from slipping too far, but the grooves are too coarse to prevent it from slopping from one side of the groove to the other. This allows the stem to slop up and down a few degrees. The other issue I had is that I ordered an 85mm length and it seemed to be a lot closer to 105. Either the wrong one was sent to me, or the length is measured from the center of the pivot point instead of the base collar. On the plus side, it didn't let me down, and it seems to be solid otherwise. The other upside was that for the price, it was a cheap way to figure out what angle I wanted/needed to make my bike fit better. I've since replaced this with a Profile Design Aris Bike Stem 115 degree 90mm length solid stem. Now the only thing clicking, creaking, popping, moaning, & groaning on the bike is me.

It did the job
The item did the job, elevate my position, but sometimes make noise that you think that it will break and you kind of get worried

Great addition!
I bought this for a cheap bike I bought from walmart. Initially I thought the bike might be defective as the OE stem fit pretty loosely around the bike. Howeber I was able to salvage the bike by replacing the cheap factory stem with this bad boy! No longer do the handle bars become misalinged with the wheels. This is a very solid product

Works great! One note / bonus is that the handlebar ...
I don't think you can beat this for the price. I ordered the 85 mm with 25.4 mm habdlebar clamp. Put it on my Giant Revel. Works great! One note / bonus is that the handlebar clamp is actually black. That was a bonus for me because my bike has all black hardware. I did have to add a spacer or shim to the stem. I added 2 mm spacer, but I think a 1 mm would work. That was on the vertical stem part, not on the handlebar.

Worked great on my cross bike
Worked great on my cross bike. I wanted my handlebars slightly more forward and it did that. You can also raise them, but I didn't use that feature. The only thing that looked a little weird was the front bracket not being painted black, so I did that myself.

Always a bit loose
Needs to be constantly re-tightened, but even worse, no matter how tight you make it theres always a bit of slack, makes me wonder if all adjustable stems behave this way.

excellent.
The angle bolt constantly works loose and has to be tightened every couple of days, Other than that, excellent.
