you want to know soil moisture? this will tell you.

yard, container garden, whatever. if you want to know what kind of moisture is at root level, this is the device. and it automatically calibrates itself for different soil compositions and saturation potential so you don't have a reading in sand that you would get if you used it in clay.

Consistent readings but not tied to standard soil moisture levels

If you are dealing with a silt loam soil, by the book, a soil below field capacity (saturation) and above wilting point (very dry) should give a moisture percentage in the ~20-30% range. When testing in the field recently, a saturated silt loam soil above field capacity (mud) read at simply 15% moisture, well below the expected ~30% range. Confused, I put it in a glass of water to test it and it confirmed 14.3% moisture. So bottom line, if you recalibrate it to your needs, it might work great. If trying to use it as an industry standard, this isn't it.
